CBD & Me: What Research (and the Public) Has Been Saying About CBD
The [Researched] Benefits of CBD
There is a lot of grey area when it comes to claims about the benefits of CBD (also known as cannabidiol) given that the FDA has neither approved nor regulated any CBD products (aside from Epidiolex, an FDA-approved medication for rare forms of childhood epilepsy). However, current research suggests that CBD has the potential to provide relief for many different health conditions, including chronic pain, anxiety, cancer, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and more.
Many health care providers believe that CBD is one of the most promising natural health remedies available today and Houston-based physicians like, Dr. Olga Obie, seek to dispel myths about CBD. “Although medical claims are not yet verifiable, many people are using CBD for various needs,” says Dr. Obie. But she stresses that anyone interested in consuming CBD should consult with their own medical doctor before embarking on that journey. After all, when taken in extremely high doses, recent research has shown that CBD can affect the liver in lab mice so consumers should be aware. But, when taken in low and responsible doses, CBD can be quite helpful. Let’s talk about how.

CBD Can Provide Pain Relief
CBD is a non-psychoactive compound that is derived from the hemp plant. When extracted and blended with a carrier oil (such as hemp seed oil or MCT oil), CBD can be consumed in appropriate doses for natural pain management, making it a great alternative for patients with osteoarthritis according to The Arthritis Foundation. This is because CBD works with the body’s natural cannabinoids, which bind to cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2) in the nervous system to help the body achieve a state of homeostasis. If you have a cannabinoid deficiency (and most of us do), CBD patches up the gaps in the endocannabinoid system, aiding the body’s natural defenses against pain, inflammation, and disease.
CBD Can Reduce Inflammation
In addition to providing natural pain relief, CBD interacts with the body’s nervous system to reduce inflammation, which is a major cause of countless diseases and disorders. According to Harvard Medical School, “CBD applied on the skin could help lower pain and inflammation due to arthritis . . . CBD inhibits inflammatory and neuropathic pain, two of the most difficult types of chronic pain to treat.” While further research is needed to substantiate this claim, many people have found relief from the painful symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, and other chronic inflammatory diseases with natural CBD products.
CBD Can Ease Cancer-Related Symptoms (Including Nausea & Emesis)
Part of the reason why so many cancer patients use CBD products is because they are known to ease pain, nausea, and vomiting, which are just a few of the side effects associated with radiation and chemotherapy. Not only that, but CBD is also believed to alleviate some of the wasting and spasticity that many of these patients experience as a result of the disease and harsh chemical treatments. In addition, a study published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology suggests that cannabinoids have the potential to curb the spread of cancer cells, “inhibiting cancer cell migration, adhesion, and invasion.” While CBD has not been proven as an effective treatment or cure for cancer, studies like this show that there is incredible healing potential that may be discovered with further research in the coming years.
CBD Can Reduce Anxiety
As CBD continues to rise in popularity, studies are emerging that examine the relationship between CBD and mental illnesses, such as anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia. In many cases, the subjects of these studies have found relief with CBD due to its stabilizing properties, which help to regulate the body’s physiological functions in the brain. According to Healthline, “it’s thought that [CBD] alters serotonin signals . . . Low serotonin levels are common in depression. Not having enough serotonin can also cause anxiety in some people.” Given that anxiety and depression are two of the most common mental illnesses in the U.S., it’s no wonder so many people prefer CBD oil over selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). There is no dependency, few (if any) side effects, and you can stop taking it at any time without withdrawals.
CBD Can Prevent Epileptic Seizures
Of all the claims that have been made about CBD, the most substantiated one thus far is that it can help to prevent seizures associated with rare forms of childhood epilepsy, such as Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS). For decades, researchers have searched for an effective treatment option for children who suffer from these seizures, as they usually don’t respond well to anti-seizure medications. As previously mentioned, the first-ever medication containing CBD was approved by the FDA last year as an effective treatment for alleviating and preventing these epileptic seizures. Since then, many children have found relief from their seizures, with the most well-known case being Charlotte Figi in Colorado.
