How Does CBD Oil Work In The Body?

Lots of people have heard the term “CBD” before, but not many know exactly how CBD works in the body to provide natural pain and symptom relief. At Refine Pharmaceuticals, our mission is to educate people about the benefits of CBD oil, how to use it, and why it is one of nature’s best health remedies. Attend our free CBD workshop in Houston on March 16, 2019 to learn about CBD from an experienced ER physician, or continue reading for more information about how CBD oil works in the body.

What Is CBD Oil?

In order to learn how CBD oil works, it is important to first understand what CBD oil is and where it comes from. CBD, or cannabidiol, is one of the two main compounds found in the cannabis plant, next to THC, its psychoactive counterpart. CBD is also found in the hemp plant, where it is more prominent and pure. Pure CBD oil, especially that which is derived from the hemp plant and does not contain any amount of THC, has numerous health benefits when consumed in proper doses.

How Does CBD Work?

Understanding The Endocannabinoid System & Endocannabinoid Deficiency

If you’ve heard of CBD oil before, you may have some understanding of its effects in terms of pain relief, fighting inflammation, increasing appetite, easing anxiety, and more. But what most people don’t know is that the body has its own, naturally occurring cannabinoids that make up the endocannabinoid system, and that CBD oil is beneficial for people with a deficiency of these cannabinoids. What’s even more surprising is that most adults have some level of endocannabinoid deficiency.

The endocannabinoid system is interconnected with many physiological functions and operates via two cannabinoid receptors: CB1 and CB2. Each of the body’s cannabinoid receptors are responsible for different functions. For example, CB1 receptors play a large role in brain function and cognition, making them essential for memory, mood, emotions, movement, pain reception, and more. CB2 receptors, on the other hand, are predominantly found in the immune system, which is why CBD oil is so beneficial for fighting inflammation and enhancing immune system function.

So how does this work? Unlike other medications that introduce foreign chemicals into the body in order to cover up painful symptoms, CBD works with the body’s endocannabinoid system to maximize the use of its naturally occurring cannabinoids while repairing deficiencies. Just think of the endocannabinoid system like a puzzle — if several pieces have gotten lost over the years, CBD oil can aid in patching up those areas by binding to enzymes, which help the system function properly.

Just like a puzzle with missing pieces is nothing more than an incomplete picture, cannabinoid deficiency can render the system unbalanced and dysfunctional. This leads to a weakened immune system, inflammation, and other issues, which are worsened with stress, lack of exercise, and a poor diet. When CBD is introduced, this fat-soluble compound is metabolized and used by the body to repair the endocannabinoid system, leaving you in a happy, healthy state of homeostasis.
